A Woman's Affair - The Vagina Monologues
It started in the basement of the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York. It has featured celebrities such as: Calista Flockhart, Jane Fonda, Melissa Ethbridge and Oprah Winfrey. What started as a play has become an iconic phenomenon, part of a campaign to stop violence against women and the bible for the new generation of women.
Based on interviews with over 200 women, The Vagina Monologues is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning masterpiece gives voice to women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who watches a performance or reads the book will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex in quite the same way again. "At first women were reluctant to talk, "Ensler writes. "They were shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them."
Recently performed at the Oshawa Little Theatre in March 2008, Director Emily Kools joins us to talk about The Vagina Monologues and how these performances not only entertains the audiences, it also assists local women's organizations fundraise to support women victims of violence.
