BPW Meeting May 27, 2009

Dr. Nawal Ammar, a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) was the featured speaker at the May meeting of BPW Durham.
Dr. Ammar spoke to the members about her personal pathway leading her to Oshawa and some of her recent research involving violence against immigrant women in the US and domestic violence in Islamic countries.
Dr Ammar is interested in what she refers to as the “town/gown relationship" and breaking down the barriers between the university and the community. As explained by Dr Ammar, in many cases a university practices very exclusionary ways of planning and conducting research. Dr. Ammar would like to see more participatory research whereby the community provides feedback to the university about existing questions and problems so the university can in turn develop research goals and projects appropriate for the community.
